We've Got Trouble Right Here in River City

The final day of camp took students on a forensics exercise to investigate a crime in the city of "Swellvue". Sandy Lennon helped our experts gather pertinent evidence by boning up on bones: femurs for height, skulls and pelvic structure (no, not Elvis the pelvis) for sex identification, and dental records for possible age. Rosemary Richardson turned on the forensic teams to the power of botany, using an analysis of plant material at the crime scene to strengthen the investigation while Tiffany Hoyopatubbi (BCC student) and David Perlmutter (Garfield High School student) led the campers in blood type (simulated) analysis. Finally, Kendrick Shaw (BCC student) introduced the campers to the power of electron microscopy, using "Jonathan" (BCC's very own scanning electron microscope donated by BCC supporter Richard Minch ) to analyze hair samples (human and cat) found with the skeletal remains. At the conclusion of the forensics investigation and the weeklong camp, all of the scientists (present and future) celebrated with camp T-shirts, certificates, and more ice cream donated by QFC.

Thanks to Tiffany, Liz and David for a week of fantastic support!
