Environmental and Sustainability Scholarships

Introduction

It's not always easy being green, but sometimes it can pay off! We've compiled a list of scholarships and student grants that have an environmental or sustainability focus. This list is by no means complete, but it is a place to start if you are interested in a pursuing a career in an environmental-related field.

BC Foundation

The following scholarships are examples of what has been available via the BC Foundation in the past few years (although they may not be currently available). Application information is available on the Foundation web site, as are deadlines and information on how to apply. (In addition, the foundation site list numerous other scholarships. Some of them may indirectly apply to sustainable fields, such as health care and interior design scholarships. So be sure to visit the BC foundation site to see all of the available scholarships.)

East Lake Washington Audubon Society Brian Gershon Scholarship
The East Lake Washington Audubon Society Brian Gershon Scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to a BCC student who is pursuing a degree in environmental science. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to one student.

The Mike Humphries and Judith Ralston Scholarship for a Better Community
Students interested in applying for the Mike Humphries and Judith Ralston Scholarship for a Better Community should be over the age of 20, work more than 25 hours annually as a volunteer and be currently engaged in volunteer work. Applicants must also be able to demonstrate financial need and have GPA of at least 2.5, which must be increasing as the student shows greater seriousness and capacity. Along with the general application, applicants must complete a personal essay of no more than 500 words outlining their beliefs in the importance of volunteerism, what their past experience with volunteering has taught them, and how they plan to continue helping their community through volunteering. One recipient will be awarded up to $1,000 to use for tuition, books, and fees.

Outside Scholarships

The following scholarships are all available from private organizations. Some of them grants for specific campus/student projects, rather than tuition-based scholarships. Follow the links directly to the individual sources for more information.

Bob & Eleanor Grant Trust - For students of natural and environmental sciences
The Bob & Eleanor Grant Trust provides scholarships for first-generation college students studying natural or environmental sciences. The Trust can provide scholarships of up to $15,000 per year that are renewable based upon satisfactory student progress. The priority of selection criteria is: 1) need 2) passion 3) merit.
