Announcements:

(6/9/10) - The review for the final (11:30, Thursday, June 17) is now posted above.

(6/8/10) PBS Newshour created the following widget to monitor the oil spill (the video is a live feed). Notice that you can adjust the leak rate if you want to check the range (the top of the range is considered the worst-case scenario). Exxon Valdez in 1989 leaked 11 million gallons. (source)

Remember that the last set of Twitter posts is due this Saturday (June 12) but that you can post a couple more through the final exam on Thursday for extra credit.

(6/1/10) Extra Credit - Flood Certificate due Tuesday, June 8
-- We'll use an online simulated river to see how geologists typically determine the discharge of a river and understand flood hazards. To complete this exercise you should:

  • Visit the Virtual River/River Flooding Page at http://www.sciencecourseware.org/VirtualRiver/Flooding/
  • To start the exercise, click on the "Next" button. (Do not choose the Demo - it will not allow you to fill out a certificate at the end!)
  • Complete the questions.
  • Email me or print out the "Certificate of Completion" with your name and turn it in to me by Tuesday, June 8 for credit.

(5/27/10) Project 4 Teams posted

(5/25/10) Project 4 - Emergency Kits is now posted above. The first part of this project is due June 3. (Also remember that the 3rd round of Twitter posts is due this weekend - by end of the day on May 29. Then there is just one more round to go!)

(5/24/10) An outline of material covered on the second exam (Thursday) is now posted. See "Exams" above.

(5/4/10) Locating a Earthquake assignment due Tuesday, May 11.
-- We’ll use an online simulated earthquake locator to see how geologists typically locate the epicenter of an earthquake. To complete this exercise you should:

  • Visit the Virtual Earthquake Page at http://www.sciencecourseware.com/VirtualEarthquake/
  • Click the "Execute Virtual Earthquake" icon at the bottom of the page to start the assignment.
  • Complete the questions.
  • Print out the "Virtual Seismologist Certificate" with your name and turn it in to me by Tuesday, May 11 for credit.

(5/4/10) Project 3 is posted - we wil ltalk about it in class over the next week and it is due May 18 (Volcano Day - the 40th Anniversary of Mt. St. Helens historic eruption!)

(4/25/10) An outline of material covered on the first exam (Thursday) is now posted. See "Exams" above.

(4/21/10) Some great posts on the Twitter site! Since our class is a little unusual this week, I wanted to remind you that we do have the first exam scheduled for next Thursday (4/29). I'll have a review sheet posted sometime this weekend and we will discuss it in class on Tuesday.

(4/13/10) Remember that next week we will be attending Earth Week (and meeting on C130 on 4/20 and 4/22). The assignment that goes with Earth Week is posted above (project 2), and be sure to take a look at the Earth Week Schedule of Events.

(4/13/10) Project 1 - The Twitter assignment is posted above. See the class Twitter page at http://twitter.com/Geol106

(4/6/10) Remember to submit your email by Tuesday, April 13

Much like the occurrence of natural disasters, life is uncertain - check hear throughout the quarter for last minute announcements, changes and reminders.
