Tour
the Lower Duwamish River Waterway, a federal Superfund Site
Saturday, May 10th, 2:00 - 4:00 PM
In September of 2001 a five-mile stretch of the Duwamish River was
designated a federal Superfund site by the US. Environmental Protection
Agency, putting it on a list with the most toxic sites in the nation.
An EPA site investigation conducted in 1999 showed that river sediments
contain excessive levels of PCB's, Lead, Mercury, Arsenic, and other
dangerous pollutants.
So, what exactly is a Superfund site? What does it take to be accorded
this title? And how did the Duwamish, a river in our own backyard, our
"pristine" Pacific Northwest, attain this exalted status?
Join the The BCC Science Club and representatives of the Duwamish River
Cleanup Coalition, along with other local experts, for a two-hour boat
tour of the Lower Duwamish River Waterway to find out. Visit polluted
hotspots, proposed cleanup sites, and restoration projects while learning
about the Superfund Cleanup, and search for salmon, eagles and other
wildlife along the river.
The boat tour will be on Saturday, May 10th, from 2:00 - 4:00 PM. Departing
from Harbor Island Marina under the West Seattle Bridge at 2:00pm. Registration
is required.
Sign up sheets will be available at the Science Club table during Earth
Week, or contact Rob Viens in the BCC Science Division at rviens@bcc.ctc.edu
