Penguin Studies
This is a fun little site from P. Dee Boersma, faculty member and researcher from the UW. Her work with Magellanic penguins spans many years. She has grown to know many of these individual penguins and it is always fun to read her reports about their well-being. (ML)

Ocean '98 - Facts and Statistics
This website breifly lists environmental concerns, including pollution concerns and other ocean environmental issues. It is a good place to view topics and concerns. (JR/EE)

These are some sattelite photographs taken of oil spills. The website also states facts on the volume of oil spilled into the ocean. Weliked this

Fisheries:

The Center for Sustainable Fisheries
Created in 1999 by the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, the Center for Sustainable Fisheries "develops and integrates new scientific understanding, education and innovative technology in support of sustainable fisheries".  Lots of information on sustainable fisheries issues such as, over-fishing, by-catch, habitat destruction and pollution. Sustainable Fisheries Act
NOAA/NMFS site for information on the US 1996 Sustainable Fisheries Act (SFA), which amended the Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act.  Information on the law, guides to implementing regulations and plain language explanations and updates. (JL)
 
Status of Mediterranean Sea Fisheries
National Marine Fisheries Service's (NMFS) status report on the Mediterranean Sea Large Marine Ecosystem (LME).  Information on all the factors effecting the LME and fisheries. (JL)

This is a great web site!  It has current information on the status of coral reef systems worldwide.  this site allows you to access current information on resources, status, threats, and management. (KC)

National Marine Sactuaries - Coral Marine Habitat
This site is two years old, but still interesting.  It contains descriptions, impacts, protection and research and monitoring of coral reef marine sanctuaries in the U.S. (KC)

Introduced Marine Pests Program
This site describes an Introduced Marine Pests Management program in Australia.  Although this is based in Australia, I think that it could give us some good insight into establishing our own program to control the introduction of non-native species int he U.S. (KC)

Lessons from the Deep - Hot Places (Oceanic Resource Foundation)
This specific article is directly related to thermal vents along the Juan de Fuca ridge and the biodiversity present at those vents. The parent site (www.orf.org) is an excellent resource for all aspects of Oceanographic research. Aspects range from environmental awareness to images and knowledge of oceans. This site also has an excellent catalog of links that include organizations, earth friendly products, and ocean laws. (AK)

Racerocks.com
Project set up where marine wildlife/mammals are observed in natural habitat with as little intrusion as possible. Logs are kept daily of habits of marine life, effect of human interaction, and weather information. This site could possibly by a good research tool for further information on how removing the human factor may contribute to helping species. (AK)

Smithsonian's Ocean Planet Resources
This site is an alternative site that did work when opening directly. This site had a plethora of links ranging from aquariums on the Internet, scientific journals, images to question answer areas. Being that his site is not currently maintained many of the links were either dead or redirected, but the ones that were obtainable were excellent recourses. This site is an excellent blueprint as to what is out there and what a good website on ocean awareness may include. (AK)

Worldwatch Institute
Web-site for the Worldwatch Institute, a non-profit public policy research organization dedicated to providing scientifically based information on issues effecting the complex links between the world economy and its environmental support systems.  Worldwatch also publishes a highly respected magazine and numerous publications, such as their annual "State of the World" books.  Articles are aimed at an academic, highly educated audience. This web-site has an extensive data base of articles and news releases by organizations concerned about environmental issues. Many articles are written for mass market, non-scientific audience. Daily news clip section/service. (JL)
