View Student Reviews of Garbage Land

Every day the typical American throws away about 7-8 pounds of trash! Consider that there are 300 million Americans and 365 days a year and this number becomes half a billion tons of municiple waste a year! (And this does not include industrial or commercial waste, which are produced in far greater amounts.) Where does this trash go? How much of it do we recycle? How much 'could' be recycled or reused in some way? And where do the resources come from to make this "trash"? Are we throwing away the resources of future generations? Join us this Winter Quarter to discuss these questions and explore the "trail" of your own trash.

The goal of this quarterly “brown bag” seminar is to discuss some of the environmental issues facing the northwest and the world today, through an analysis of current articles and readings. This quarter we will center our discussion on Garbage Land - On the Secret Trail of Trash by Elizabeth Royte. The seminar may include volunteer work, a field trip, and/or guest lectures.
