BCC Physics and Astronomy
Information for Physics and Astronomy Major Transfer Students

The University of Washington offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Astronomy and a Bachelor of Science in Physics. Western Washington University offers a Bachelor of Science in Physics with a minor in Astronomy. Washington State University offers a Bachelor of Science in Physics with an Astrophysics option as well as a minor in Astronomy.

College coursework required by physics and astronomy programs
Three quarters of calculus: BCC MATH& 151,152,153 (Previously MATH 124,125,126)
Two additional quarters of math: BCC MATH 208 and MATH& 254 (Previously MATH 227)
Three quarters of calculus-based physics with labs: BCC Physics 121, 122 and 123
One quarter of computer programming: BCC CS 210
Three quarters of general chemistry for WSU: BCC CHEM& 161,162,163 (Previously CHEM 140,150,160)

English/Humanities: Beyond the required science courses, a broad liberal arts background is encouraged, including English composition, humanities and social sciences.

Math: The prerequisite for MATH& 151 (Previously MATH 124) is MATH& 142 (Previously MATH 120).

Physics and astronomy majors may choose either the Associate in Arts and Sciences or the Associate in Science Track 2 degree. The Associate in Arts and Sciences is the degree specified in the direct transfer agreement. Students planning to transfer to WSU should be aware that the AAS satisfies the general education requirements of WSU but the AS Track 2 does not.

The above sample schedule provides 93 credits and does not include any lower math or English classes which may needed to bring your skills up to college level. Math and English placement assessments are required prior to enrolling in math or English courses. Students who place into lower level math and/or English classes will need additional time to complete the transfer degree. In addition, foreign language requirements of the baccalaureate schools may need to be satisfied before transfer.

GPA
Students should strive to maintain a strong GPA with limited withdrawals, incompletes, repeated courses and non-graded options. No grade below 2.0 will be accepted for any individual course. Admission is granted based on GPA and completed prerequisites.
